Andrew Hignell23-Jun-2003Glamorgan won their first Twenty20 match as they comprehensively beat Worcestershireby 56 runs at Sophia Gardens.Robert Croft won an important toss and took first use of a wicket that had been used byGlamorgan in their two previous home games. Matthew Maynard and Dan Cherry, playing hisfirst Twenty20 match, then added 67 for the first wicket in 8.2 overs – Glamorgan`s beststart in the competition. Maynard was in vintage form and he never let the Worcestershirebowlers settle, smashing eight fours in a 35 ball half-century.Gareth Batty eventually caught and bowled Maynard for 72 – the best individual scoreso far in the Twenty20 Cup by a Glamorgan batsman. Michael Powell then tookover where the 37 year old had left off, and Powell raced to 66 from 38 balls, with sixfours and two huge sixes over the members enclosure.Worcestershire needed to score 171 to win and stay in the competition, but they began poorlyas Owen Parkin dismissed both openers in his second over as the visitors slipped to 8-2.Accurate spin bowling from Croft and Cosker, and some splendid ground fielding by the rest ofthe Glamorgan side meant that Worcestershire were never in the hunt, as Croft returnedfigures of 3-32 as the visitors perished seemingly every time they took the aerial routein search of runs.Needing the unlikley prospect of 77 runs in the final four overs, Croft introduced youngall-rounder Ryan Watkins into the attack, and after an accurate opening over, Watkins dismissedAdshead and Liptrot in successive balls, before Mark Harrity blocked out the hat-trick ball.Dan Cherry also came on to bowl the final over from the River End, and the young openerpolished things off dismissing Harrity and Hayward and Glamorgan can take great pride fromtheir purposeful all-round cricket this evening.
